RECORD STORE ( DAY) OF THE PAST!

Out on the Record hunt this morning, Digging through a pile of 78's, I found the article below from the San Francisco Call Bulletin From Nearly 60 years ago- January 30, 1951 about William Melander's Record Exchange which used to be in Downtown San Francisco's Tenderloin Neighborhood ( and now, apparently is either an apartment building or a parking lot)-one of San Francisco's legendary first used record stores- Anyway, Since tomorrow is "record store Day" ( and Prank has no exclusive releases , but if you're out anyway look for the new ICE NINE and DESOLATION records!) I thought We'd share this. You'll need to toggle between the two Jpegs to read it through, but enjoy how little the hobby has changed in half a century!

KUSF RECORD SWAP JANUARY 11th, 2009!!

The KUSF Rock'n' Swap Is happening again next Sunday, Janaury 11th, 2009.. and Prank will have a table at it again of all sorts of music. If you're planning on attending a need a specific prank release, drop us an email beforehand. All the proceeds from the door and the table rental help with the operating budget of the radio station - SF's main community free form radio station, so it's a worth cause ( and as always I really recommend Carolyn Keddy's from MRR's show on Tuesday from Noon to 3 for the best in Garage Punk- Great show with heaps of new bands)

The sellers at it are largley music fans who scower Yard Sales, Estate sell offs, Buy collections and generally do so to fund their record buying habits and pick up a few bucks. People get turned off by the "Record collector Fair" tag, but Prices of everything are rarely outrageous, often much cheaper than stores or online for more common stuff, and it's mostly a lot of dealers buying stuff off each other to keep, flog off on their online store, upgrade, trade or whatever. So come out. I sell A lot of old records of all types at this thing, but also now will sell Prank Titles at near-wholesale to encourage people to come out.

If you're not in the bay area, here's a couple spots I check to find record shows around the country:
Vinyl Times
Record Shows Of America
Record Collectors Guild ( Search forums)

SAD NEWS: STREETLIGHT RECORDS on 24th Street Closing

Sad news in the record Collecting department of San Francisco, Streetlight Records on 24th Street in Noe Valley have announced they will be closing on January 31st of next year. When I first moved to SF, both Streetlight Records and Aquarius Records ( Back when "Aquarius records" actually HAD "records") were located on 24th and both were necessary stops on the way to the old Clipper Street MRR house. While the days of $3 copies of "hardcore ljubljana", $4 Black Flag "nervous breakdown" original press, and other insane finds I've found there over the years are largely over worldwide, it still was a great stop on the record haunt route of San Francisco and they always consistently bought and carried Prank and other DIY Releases. They'll keep their San Jose, Santa Cruz and Market locations ( the Market street location once had the (deserved) reputation of a Punk Rock goldmine for the odd offhand releases that would dropped by older people in the Castro, now with a reduced emphasis on vinyl... I think I've had one punk score there this decade!) So in the next three months, stop in on Streetlight, check out their diverse selection of DIY releases and sometimes interesting oddball used finds and Maybe pick up that Harry Connick CD or whatever your Mom wants for X-mas there as opposed to Online !!!!

P.S. Late Condolescences to Open Mind Music who's market Street Location closed earlier this month. Two record stores, one month!! Sad times for the vinyl fiend!
